A god the size of a mountain fell sideways. Its body is the landscape now —
ribs arching over the horizon, a spine you can walk along, and a heart that is
still beating somewhere ahead of you.
You are an Ashwalker. Three stages stand between you and that heart.
MELEE WITH WEIGHT. Every swing commits. Wind-up, contact, recovery — you
cannot cancel out of a bad decision, and you are not supposed to be able to.
Light attacks chain into a three-hit combo; heavy attacks break guards and
launch. Dodges are invulnerable through the first half of the roll. Parries
stagger your attacker, fill your fury, and are the fastest way to turn a fight
around. Every landed hit freezes the world for a moment, throws sparks and
kicks the camera — because that is what impact is made of.
FOUR ENEMIES, FOUR ANSWERS. The slow, telegraphed Husk teaches you spacing.
The Crawler punishes greed — you cannot out-trade it, only dodge the lunge and
punish the recovery. The Warden raises a guard your light attacks bounce off, so
break it with a heavy or get behind it. The Screamer floats out of reach and
throws fire. There is no single answer to a room containing all four.
A BOSS THAT TESTS ALL OF IT. THE LAST REFLEX waits under the heart in three
phases: sweeping blows and summoned adds, then a charge and expanding ground
rings you have to dodge through, then everything at once, faster. Each phase
transition staggers it and opens the weak point on its spine. That is your
window. It does not have a health gate you can out-damage.
BECOME SOMETHING ELSE. Clear a stage and take a gift from the corpse: more
damage, more health, more speed, a wider parry window, more fury, an extra mend.
Two per stage. By the third stage you are visibly, audibly stronger than the
Ashwalker who started the climb.
Death is cheap, learning is not. Die and you restart the stage with your
upgrades intact — the game respects your time and still expects you to get
better. Progress saves between stages.
